Sikhs With A Mission (referred to as the Mission) was actually set up in 1997. Back then, it was called Youth With A Mission. The name change occurred in 2003 just before we went on our tour of Canada. It was prompted by a well wisher who felt that the name was not inclusive of the elder members of the community. Being a valid observation, the change was effected immediately.

With the blessings of Sardar Ranjit Singh Kaleke and the committee in office at that time, the first Mission Centre and Clubhouse was opened on the second floor of the Wisma Tatt Khalsa. Two huge rooms were conjoined to become the admin area. One section had recreational equipment like Billiards, Table Football, darts etc and another section as a Training area. Another two rooms were joined to become an auditorium with all the latest gadgets. This is where we then started having the ‘Seminars of the Month’.

In 1999, the Mission embarked on it's first mission – Project Starfish. Sikh students from four participating local Universities would be deployed to Petaling Tin every Sunday from 2pm to 6pm to coach the Sikh students there gathered in the local Gurdwara. The Uni students worked very hard and the students in Petaling Tin started to show remarkable progress. That is when Sardar Harvinder Singh who is my co-Director in the Mission, mooted the idea that it was not enough to just help the Sikhs of Petaling Tin. He said we had to set up a proper school to help the entire community, yet open to all others. He pursued this dream until 2001, when we opened the Sri Dasmesh School in the same Wisma Tatt Khalsa.

In 2004, in conjunction with the 400th anniversary of the ‘Parkaash Dihara’ of the Siri Guru Jyot Sahib, we launched Snatam Sikhi through 4 programs held at the Mantin Gurdwara Sahib. These programs were instrumental in introducing these very uplifting gatherings where the emphasis was on congregational worship.

In 2005, we launched the Candle-Light Satsang in the Parliament Gurdwara. This was also the year we held the first Men’s and Women’s Camp, on the island of Bali. In 2007, we held it at Kuantan and this year, in 2009, it is being held in Phuket Island, Thailand.

In 2009 also, we have finally rolled out the full Mission, with all the activities that we can currently handle. This has been made possible by the sacrifices of all the Mission members who worked tirelessly with full commitment towards keeping the Mission dream alive. It is because of their sacrifices of comfort and family that today, under the able supervision of the pioneers, the next generation can take on and move the Mission to the next level.
