Coming of Age’ Ceremony
After Janam Sanskaar, this is the first ceremony in your son’s life. Introduced by Sahib Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Himself. It is performed as your son moves into his teens.
The turban is the ‘crown of cloth’ of the Middle Eastern and Asian kings. Muslim and Hindu kings, noblemen and men of high office till today adorn their heads with cloth turbans. Even right here in Malaysia, our sultans and all Malays of high social status wear the tengkolok or the setanjak at all official functions.

In the days of kingdoms, when little princes of the royal households became old enough to have their own seats in the royal courts, this ceremony would be performed to announce the coming of age of the young prince, so that the citizens of the country now had to observe the correct protocols when conducting themselves with him. In return, he too was expected to conduct himself no longer as a child, but as a young man, with responsibility and maturity befitting a royal.
Hence, when Guru Gobind Singh Ji transformed us into ‘Lords’ or ‘Sardar Sahibs’ and introduced this ceremony, it became very popular in Sikh households. Further understanding and significance of this ceremony can be obtained by reading the notes presented on our purpose made invitation cards that are available from us upon request.
